Independent Reading:
We are back reading independent reading books this week. You should have received a chart which you will need to fill in daily and pass in on Friday. The expectation is you will have read 75 pages during the week (15 pages a day). Please read at night to ensure you meet the expectation.

Progress reports:
I handed out progress reports today. Students are expected to get them signed and returned by Friday, 12/18. Parents/Guardians: Please call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Presentations for Career or Poem Recitation:
You have chosen to either present on a career or memorize a poem. Please be prepared and know the date you are presenting. We made the schedule in class today. See me if you have any questions.

Career Research Paper due on Monday!

Your big assignment this week is to complete your career research paper. Due to the snow day, it will be due on Monday, December 14th. If you completed the rough draft on time, you have my comments for revision. Please make sure your paper includes the following:
1. Introduction (originally titled Goals and Dreams)
2. Background and History
3. Salary, Growth and Opportunity
4. Education, Training and Personality
5. A Day in the Life
6. Conclusion
7. Works Cited page

Make sure there are parenthetical citations for all facts and ideas that are not yours. Within almost all paragraphs in sections 2-5, you should have a citation.
Make sure your works cited page is complete.
You should have a final draft rubric and a sample works cited page, both which are on the workspace in First Class. I'll also post them here under Helpful documents shortly.

For this week, the goal is a complete rough draft of your career project! You should already have your goals and dreams section and your background and history completed.

The specific deadlines upcoming deadlines are as follows:
Completed interview is due on Tuesday, December 1st. You may produce an audio recording, a transcript or an email.
Rough draft of Salary, Growth and Opportunity section is due Tuesday, December 1st.
Rough draft of Education, Training and Personality section is due block day, 12/1 or 12/2.
Rough drafts of Day in the Life and Conclusion are due Friday, December 4th.

Homework for week of 11/16

Career project updates and deadlines:
You should have your note cards completed for your research paper (between 12-15). I am going to sign off on your checklist on Monday.
In class, you should finish a rough draft of your Goals and Dreams section (see above post for questions). In addition, you should have 10-15 interview questions completed by block day.
It will be necessary to do some of this work at home in order to meet deadlines. Please do so.

Independent reading: You should have 200 pages of your novel completed by Friday.

Homework for week of 11/9

This week, we do not have school on Veteran's Day: 11/11, so our schedule is slightly modified. I have handed you a deadline checklist so you know what is due for the career project (under helpful documents if you need it again). I also have a job shadow permission form if you are interested in shadowing a person in your career for a day. Remember you will receive 10 extra points on your paper if you complete this component, but it is not required.

Thanks to Mr. Tanguay (and students who reminded me!) for the Bridges website. It is listed under helpful documents and is a great resource for this project. 

Lastly, keep reading! Your independent book is due next Friday, 11/20.

homework for week of 11/2

Independent reading books: You should read in your independent reading books each night (15 pages daily). This means you should be at page 60 by Friday.

Career project: We are starting our career project this week. You have downloaded the overview (under helpful documents). By Friday, you have to have a topic. By Monday, you have to have three sources which you have printed out or photocopied. We'll be in the library on block day and Friday in order to make this happen. 

Job shadow for career project: If you would like to set up a job shadow during Thanksgiving break, I'll have paperwork for that on Friday. An interview is mandatory for this project and if you job shadow, you will receive ten extra points on your final paper! See me if you have questions!

Our work this week centers around the essay we are writing. This essay will count both towards your first quarter numerical grade and it will also count as the standard for writing for the quarter. Journal #5:
Describe the details of the clip. What do you notice about the scenery, both in Nepal and Bombay? How are they different? Describe the girls and women in this video. What does it make you think about?

What are the conflicts in the book so far? What do you think is Lakshmi’s biggest problem? Why? As you write, please use specific examples from the book.

Journal #7
Seven days ago, __________________________________. Now, no one will talk to me.
Fill in the blank and then expand this idea to explain both what happened and how the character feels about this reaction. Does he/she think it is fair? Does s/he feel badly for what happened? Get us into the mind of that character.

Journal #8
Imagine Lakshmi after the story ends. Based on what you know about her character and circumstances, write a new ending to the book a year after she leaves the brothel. You may write in the same form as the book or choose a different style. However, write in her voice.

We have two big deadlines coming up. Please see below for more details.


Independent reading book is due Friday. The expectation is you will have read 200 pages in your book to meet the standard. Please look at your calendar and adjust it so you can meet both your daily goals and your ultimate goal on Friday.


Rough draft of memoir is due Tuesday: If you are behind, make sure you have something by block day.
Final draft of memoir is due Monday, September 28th. See memoir assignment for more details.

Journals 1-4 are due block day: Most of the journals are connected to your memoir. If you have the rough draft, you receive credit for journals 2-4. The other journal is the "I am from" poem we did in class.

Your reading goal this week is to get through 100 pages of your book. Please note your daily deadline on your calendar and make sure you are on track.

Monday: Meet daily reading goal; update reading log. Think about an important moment in your life that has impacted you, positively or negatively, and shaped the person who you are today.
Tuesday: Meet daily reading goal; update reading log. Choose a topic for your memoir.
Block day:  Meet daily reading goal; update reading log. Begin writing your memoir. Complete the lead.

For Block Day:

Bring in a photo of yourself (it can be recent or one from back in the day) and something that represents inspiration to you. We'll share a few of these each day as a way to get to know each other.

For the weekend:
Bring in your binder, post-it notes, highlighters for Tuesday.

If  you have a book you think would be a good fit for independent reading, bring it in on Tuesday.
If you are presenting your inspiration, see assignment above.

Final exam and portfolio details

You will receive all the materials you need in class, but in case you lose anything, I'll attach them here under helpful documents as well. 
Your final will consist of :
  • a cumulative vocabulary exam on units 1 and 2: 40%
  • portfolio: 50%
  • response to peers' portfolios: 10%

Remember that your portfolio must include the following:
  1. 2 page reflective letter to reader
  2. goal sheet  for second semester
  3. Reading log, completed for the entire year
  4. Cover sheet which lists best work and reflects on each piece
  5. Five pieces numbered consecutively
  6. Reader form completed by parent, teacher or adult who knows you well.
Your final exam will take place on Thursday, June 18th and you must be there for the exam block.  Please see me if you have any questions.

Homework for weeks of 6/1 and 6/9

We have two weeks left of classes before finals. Here are the deadlines to consider:

Final draft of your memoir due Tuesday, 6/9.
Second memoir for independent reading due Friday, 6/12
Journals #21-25 due block day, 6/10 and 6/11

Each night this week, there will be vocabulary homework to complete. Please take time to do this, as 30% of your final will be vocabulary.

Memoir unit and work for 5/19 and 5/26

We continue our memoir unit.  Please note the following deadlines:
  • Your first memoir is due block day, 5/21 or 5/22.
  • Journals #20-25 are due 5/21 or 5/22.
  • Please select second memoir by Friday, 5/23. This book is due 6/12.
  • A rough draft of your memoir is due by next Friday, 5/29. We'll conference on these drafts the following week.
  • Final draft of memoir due on 6/9.
  • It is not too early to begin studying for the vocabulary portion of your final. It will be a cumulative exam, covering units 1 and 2 from your vocabulary books.
  • Progress reports were distributed this week. Make sure you got one.

work for week of 5/11

Read at least 20 minutes a night at home. Your first memoir is due next block day, May 21st or 22nd.

See the assignment and rubric under helpful documents about the specifics of our work these next weeks. I went over the guidelines in class.

Keep a log of all your reading in your journal, including: book title and author, date of reading, time read, and pages read. I'll check these at the end of each week.

Journals #20-25 will be due next block day, May 21st or 22nd. Make sure you are caught up before then.

REMINDER: Progress reports are due next week. Make sure you have all outstanding work in by Monday, May 18th.

Homework for week of 4/27

Your work this week is to finish your independent reading book. It should be complete by the time you come to class. In addition, please complete the Book Notes (both sides!) I gave you in class. It is due on Friday. Remember to think about your commentary or insight rather than summary.

In addition, we'll be covering some last-minute "Quick Tips" for the SATs in class. In case you don't know, the SATS will be administered this Saturday at 8 a.m. at GHS. Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria from 7-8 a.m.  Please see me if you have any questions.

We continue to work on our career project. Here are the deadlines you should keep in mind:

Block day: rough draft of the following sections are due: introduction, history and background and salary, growth and demand. You should have the introduction and history and background sections completed BEFORE you come to class on block day. The salary section will be done in class.

Vocabulary quiz on JAC/TRACT words will be on block day.

Deadlines for next week:
Interviews must be typed up by Monday, 3/30.
Second half of rough draft (Education and Training, A Day in the Life of and Conclusion) due on block day.
Works Cited page will be done in class on Tuesday.

Midterm Exam

Your exam will consist of a portfolio and an exam. Portfolio instructions and forms are here, available to download in case you need it.

In addition, you will take an exam on Macbeth, Acts I-III. The study guides for each act will help you study. The exam will consist of character identification, 15 multiple choice questions and one short answer question.

Breakdown for grading:
Portfolio: 70 points
Responses to peer portfolio: 10 points
Macbeth test: 20 points
